Tamil Nadu registers 522 new Covid cases, 1 death | Chennai News

CHENNAI: One person died and fresh cases of Covid-19 continued to increase on Thursday when the state added 522 new cases compared to 509 new cases on Wednesday and 496 on Tuesday. The state discharged 447 patients. There were 5,233 active cases in hospitals or home isolation for treatment of Covid-19.
The death toll rose to 38,042. An 82-year-old man from Tirupur, who tested positive for Covid-19 on September 20 and admitted the same day at the medical college hospital in the district, died on Wednesday following septic shock and Covid pneumonia.
Barring Dharmapuri, Nagapattinam and Thirupathur all other districts reported new cases. Chennai reported 110 new cases, the highest in the state. After Chennai, Chengalpet (53) and Coimbatore (28) also reported a marginal increase in fresh cases. Kanyakumari (36), Tiruvallur (24), Salem (22) and Erode (20) reported 20 or more fresh cases on Thursday. Eleven districts reported between 10 and 20 new cases and 17 others reported cases in single digits.
Nearly 60% of the active cases in the state were in Chennai (2369), Coimbatore (411) and Chengalpet (414) followed by 222 in Kanyakumari and 185 in Erode. Of the 445 hospital admissions for Covid-19 across the state, there were 175 patients on oxygen beds and 49 of them in ICU.
Meanwjile, in Puducherry, a 72-year-old woman with comorbidities died of Covid-19 infection taking the death toll to 1,973 in the Union territory. Puducherry reported the maximum death with 1,539 followed by Karaikal (265), Yanam (113) and Mahe (56).
The territory reported 86 fresh cases of Covid-19 infection on Thursday.
