pec: PEC alumni rally for e-Voting in upcoming elections | Events Movie News

Elections for the PECOSA’s Executive Committee (Punjab Engineering College Old Students Association) Chandigarh for the term 2022-2024 have finally been announced post appointment of Er Sarvjeet Singh Virk as the Returning Officer and a detailed process for the same has since been rolled out.
“It is a matter of satisfaction for the nearly 16000 alumni members registered with the official portal of the institute, (the Punjab Engineering College – Deemed to be a University)) that In its 100th year of growth, from this election onwards a provision for e-Voting alongside the physical voting is finally being implemented thanks to the very supportive and progressive participation of the top management of the institute,” says Tejinder Singh Bedi – PEC Alum of 1973 & one of the staunchest supporters for E Connectivity & E-Voting.

Rough estimates of various alumni members indicate that the actual count of alums spread all over the globe can be as high as 25000 with nearly 9000 possibly still remaining out of bounds for reasons of inability to reach them so far.

Adds Bedi, “The demand for the introduction of e-Voting, it may be recalled here had been lingering on for over 5 years to ensure participation of all of its cream of 16000 alums spread all across the globe in very senior positions against just a handful – in fact just a few hundreds of alums who could visit the institute in each election being the only polling station for the same on the entire globe!”

Along with Bedi, the other biggest proponents include Yogesh Jain, Durga Dutt Rajdev, KK Khanna, Singhs – Babbar Jasbir, Inderjeet & Tarsem – who being part of the same batch got the maximum majority members in the last EC tried their best to force this change. “However, with the last elected body of PECOSA getting embroiled in an internal court case the body could neither conduct fresh elections on its own nor could tie up with the institute all this while to secure its official database of all of its registered alums for developing a fool-proof model for the introduction of e-Voting as an additional option,” says Bedi.

Amid the pandemic since 2020, while most of the activity had gradually switched over to a digitized way of functioning, the process to upgrade to this option continued to remain unaddressed despite many strong technical volunteers like Swaran Kalra, VKSWhney and Narinder Nijhawan offering all support.

Yogesh Jain, who after Amarjit Singh Kohli, was the first active member to infuse energy into the drive to try and bring most alums together. He says, “To connect the PEC alumni globally it was a must that e-voting is added as an additional mode of voting and the PECOSA data is shared on the portal. Despite reservations of the current PECOSA committee on both the issues, e-voting is being used and the data is being shared on the website of PECOSA. We aim to broaden this database to add designation, expertise, and strengths of alumni to help each other and make PECOSA a truly global association.”

Both Jasbir Singh Babbar and Durga Dutt Rajdev who are out to the USA for a reunion with their kids post withdrawal of COVID constraints are happy with the new option for now like most other alums based in Australia, Singapore, Thailand, Bangkok, UK, Ireland & Canada they won’t have to fly to India for casting their as votes. It may be added here that out of the 16000 data base with the institute more than 5000 had been organised by Amarjit Singh Kohli as long ago as by late 90s.
