LUCKNOW: Ayodhya junction’s first phase redevelopment is set to be completed by the end of this year and is expected to boost religious tourism in the holy city and eventually the district’s economy.
On Thursday, general manager of northern railway (NR) Ashutosh Gangal inspected the under-construction work of the station and other railways projects of Lucknow division.
Indian Railways is re-developing the railway station with a vision to cater one lakh passengers per day, which will be one of the largest footfalls in Uttar Pradesh.
The station will be developed in two phases. The first phase will include a double-storied building, mela shed, circulating area, two foot over bridges, dormitory, sick rooms, escalators, elevators, food court, air-conditioned retiring rooms, LED billboards, furnished quarters for railway staff and other facilities.
“GM was satisfied with the pace of the ongoing work at Ayodhya,” said divisional railway manager Lucknow division Suresh Sapra, who accompanied GM during the inspection.
In the second phase, the railways is expected to develop a large waiting and parking area for pilgrims in the southern part of the railway station after acquiring land from the state government. For the project, sanctioning of the fund is yet to be approved.
After the completion of the first phase, the station could cater to 25,000 passengers on peak days like Dussehra, Ram Navami, Diwali, Chaudah Kosi and Chaurasi Kosi parikramas, but after the second phase’s completion, the station could handle four times more passengers.
Apart from inspecting the Ayodhya railway station, GM also inspected the ongoing work rail track doubling between Barabanki to Ayodhya Cantt stations (earlier called Faizabad station). The track is expected to be completed by December 2023. The double track would extend upto Jaunpur station. Lucknow division has also mooted a proposal for third and fourth track between Malhur (Lucknow) and Barabanki station.
GM also inspected the track between Charbagh and Kanpur central station on which railway is going to increase the trains operation speed by 160 kmph from existing 110 kmph. Further, the NR would also develop fourth track between the two stations as well and the project was sanctioned last week.
